We've come a long way in preserving our legacy. One of the rooms in the
Berrick Hall has been named "Berrick Family & Saint Joseph At Home"
and is now open to the public for viewing. Photographs of the Berrick Family and
of our alma mater are on permanent display in this room together with our archives.
This is an ongoing project and we will be adding more archived materials relating
to the Berrick Family and St. Joe in the future.
The occasion of having this permanent display came about with the success of our
Saint Joseph Festa at the Berrick Hall for the past two years and the close relationship
and trust created between the management of the Berrick Hall and the archive committee.
We would like to thank Ms. Nunokawa, general manager, for her understanding and
granting us the room to showcase our archives and to portrait the people who used
to live at the Berrick Hall.
I would also like to take this opportunity to express our special thanks to the
Yokohama Greenery Foundation (Zaidan Hojin Yokohama-shi Midori no Kyokai); the
Yokohama Archives of History; and the Yokohama City Central Library for their
assistance and support. We would also like to thank Gyosei for providing us the
archived Forwards in 2004 from which we were able to digitize; and last but not
the least, Dr. Malcom Fredman in Australia, one of the descendents of the Berrick
Family, for supplying us with their family photos and researched materials.
With not much material on hand to start, we spent a great deal of time and energy
to collect, study, and edit the materials. I would like to thank Jimmy Patterson
(1978) for his continuous search for the materials both for the Berricks and for
St. Joe as a member of the Archive Committee. It goes the same to Hideo Nakanishi
(1964) for safe keeping our memorabilia at his office until this day and for his
devotion in taking time for the Festa activities. There are also several other
alumni who have donated for this archive project and would like to thank them
all.
Our third St. Joseph Festa will be held from November 21 to 23 at the Berrick
Hall and this room is included as one of the exhibits. If you have photos from
your boarding days or a memoir, do let us know for inclusion in our archives.
